The AFL have confirmed that this year’s Sir Doug Nicholls round will kick off in Alice Springs, as Melbourne Demons take on Adelaide Crows at Tio Traeger Park to close Round 10.
Now in its 13th year, the inaugural Sir Doug Nicholls’s round celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players and communities, connecting AFL fans to Indigenous culture.
Sir Doug not only played 54 games for Fitzroy, but was also the first Aboriginal person to be knighted, and is remembered as a pioneering campaigner for reconciliation, and for his devotion to the well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Each club will release their unique indigenous-themed guernseys, which will be worn during all Round 11 matches.
Dreamtime at the ‘G is the pinnacle of the week long celebrations, as thousands flock to the MCG for the traditional rivalry between Essendon and Richmond.
This year’s jumper is especially significant for Richmond’s Daniel Rioli, and Essendon’s Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, as the design for both club’s jumpers is inspired by their native Tiwi-Islands.
McDonald-Tipungwuti says this round is particularly special, as “the artwork tells a story and it’s very special to see myself and teammates wearing it and celebrating my culture.”
